While it won\u2019t be truly live, there will be a new image about every 50 seconds of that hour, the agency said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4qyVNqeJ6wQ?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Updates will also be available at ESA\u2019s Twitter account and the hashtag #MarsLIVE, the agency said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNormally, we see images from Mars and know that they were taken days before,\u201d said James Godfrey, spacecraft operations manager at ESA\u2019s mission control center in Darmstadt, Germany, in a statement. \u201cI\u2019m excited to see Mars as it is now \u2014 as close to a martian \u2018now\u2019 as we can possibly get!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But haven\u2019t we seen images of Mars before? Yes, but not live, the ESA said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Often data and observations of the red planet are taken when a spacecraft is not in direct contact with Earth, so the images are stored until they can be sent back, the ESA said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on where Mars and Earth are in their orbits around the sun, the messages that journey through space can take anywhere from 3 to 22 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To begin the live stream, the ESA estimates it will take about 17 minutes for the light needed to form the images to travel directly from Mars to Earth and then another minute to get through the wires and servers on the ground, the ESA said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNote, we\u2019ve never tried anything like this before, so exact travel times for signals on the ground remain a little uncertain,\u201d the agency said in a statement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mars is making its live streaming debut, and the show will reveal the red planet in a whole new light.
