Explore the Roman Colosseum with these 360° tours

Long ago, in 70 AD, Emperor Vespasian ordered the construction of a huge amphitheater in the heart of Rome. This structure would become the Roman Colosseum, one of the most impressive buildings in the history of mankind.

ROMAN COLISEUM

The construction of the Colosseum was an amazing achievement. Workers used advanced engineering techniques to build the amphitheater in only eight years, despite its large size and complexity. The Colosseum could hold between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators in its stands, and became the venue for the most spectacular and dangerous events of ancient Rome.

One of the most popular events that took place were the gladiator fights.

Another popular event was the wild animal fights. Lions, tigers and other ferocious animals were brought from distant lands to engage in combat against each other, or against the gladiators.

The Roman Colosseum has survived for more than two millennia, and although it has suffered damage over the years due to earthquakes, fires and looting, it is still standing. It is one of the most visited monuments in Italy, with over 5 million visitors a year, and has been the subject of several films and works of art throughout history.

It was also used for public executions, where the condemned were brought to the center of the amphitheater to be executed in front of a crowd of people.
